FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Morgan Fitness Center Announces Free New Mom Yoga Class Starts September 15

Stephanie Bogan, Director of Morgan Fitness Center, announced the launch of a New Mom Yoga class, starting September 15 and running for eight weeks. The goal of the class is to teach new mothers the most popular and effective poses and breathing practices to help them get back in shape.

“We felt new mothers needed a gentle but effective way to recover from childbirth,” said Bogan. “Even though it’s a natural process, it’s also very rigorous and can leave new mothers with lingering aches and pains and pounds. Some think the only solution is to hit the gym, but we think there is a better way. Yoga helps new mothers focus on their bodies, tone sagging muscles, and speed recovery from childbirth. At the same time, yoga helps to clarify thinking and improve emotional stability.”

The first session of this class is free because it was developed with a grant from the Susan Berry Foundation for Maternal Fitness.

The only prerequisite for the class is the completion of a release form, signed by the new mother and her healthcare provider. Signed release forms will be collected at the first session.

Space is limited, so interested mothers are urged to sign up soon, either by stopping by the Morgan Fitness Center front desk at 958 Oak Street in Mayberry, Illinois, or by downloading the release form and signing up at MorganFitnessCenter.com. For more information, visit MorganFitnessCenter.com.

New Class Reveals the Gentle Power of Yoga for New Mothers

Are you a new mom struggling to lose the baby weight? You’re not alone. Baby weight is one of the most common health issues for new mothers, outpacing fatigue and lingering aches and pains.

Maybe you’ve tried hitting the gym and doing crunches and aerobics. And still the weight clings to your body. This is an ideal time to let your body heal and to take the measured, gentle approach of the New Mom Yoga class at the Morgan Fitness Center.

The New Mom Yoga class starts September 15 and runs for eight weeks. The only prerequisite is a release form signed by the new mother and her healthcare provider.

  • New to yoga? No problem. Each class will teach the most popular and effective poses, stretches, and breathing exercises for beginners. Plus, we’ll give you tips for modifying poses until you get stronger.
  • No yoga gear? We’ll supply mats, blocks, straps, and blankets. Just wear loose, comfortable clothing that will let you move.
  • Is this class really free? Yes! We got a grant from the Susan Berry Foundation for Maternal Health. If you complete the course and complete an evaluation form, you’ll get a 50 percent discount on your next class at the fitness center. It’s our way of saying thanks for helping us improve future classes.
  • Is yoga really better than typical workouts? Yes! Many yoga poses are gentler than typical exercises like crunches and sit-ups. To learn more, read this article. [link to “Five Reasons Yoga Is Better than a Typical Workout for New Mothers” article.]

Losing the Baby Weight: The Surprising Power of Yoga

If you’re like me, you may be amazed and intimidated by news stories of celebrities who seem to lose their baby weight in just a few weeks. Is this the new norm? Should every new mom be posing in a skimpy bikini with an infant on our hips?

Not necessarily. For many women, losing the baby weight is a real struggle that is measured in teaspoons and ounces. And every pregnancy is different, even for the same woman. In reality, it may take up to a year to return to your pre-pregnancy weight, especially if you are breastfeeding.

When and How to Start Losing the Baby Weight

For the first six weeks after birth, just focus on the basics. Even if this isn’t your first baby, you will need to adjust to the new baby’s personal routine of round-the-clock naps, feedings, and diaper changes. Drink lots of water. Eat a healthy diet filled with fruit and vegetables. Get as much sleep as you can. During this six-week period, many women may lose about half their baby weight.

At your six-month checkup, ask your healthcare provider if you are physically ready to begin a diet and exercise program. A typical goal is to get down to your pre-baby weight on or about your baby’s first birthday.

If you don’t already have a favorite exercise program, consider signing up for a post-pregnancy yoga class.

Five Reasons Yoga Is Better Than a Typical Workout for New Mothers

Yoga (lowercase y) is a system of poses, stretches, and deep breathing exercises. While yoga may seem tame compared to a typical workout, yoga’s slow pace offers at least five benefits to new mothers.

  1. Gives you a chance to focus on your body and its needs. It’s natural to focus your time and energy on the new baby. But you need care and attention too. Making time for a yoga class will help you connect with your body and its needs. Even better, you’ll get a chance to meet other new mothers.
  2. Strengthens and tones sagging muscles.  Childbirth is a natural process. But its demands may leave you with lingering aches and pains. Yoga poses can help you tone and realign your body without stress. Eight weeks of striking the Warrior pose may tone your body better than doing a hundred crunches every day.
  3. Speeds recovery. A breathing exercise or pose can stretch cramped muscles and send blood coursing through your body, making it easier to maintain a toned, flexible body. Some yoga students see visible results in as little as six weeks.
  4. Clarifies your thinking. Even with help, you may feel frazzled as you try to add caring for an infant to your long to-do list. And then there is the challenge of trying to eat “healthy’ and lose the baby weight. When someone offers you a doughnut, do you have the self-discipline to say “no, thanks”? The focus and discipline may help.
  5. Improves emotional stability and serenity. Mood swings after childbirth are normal. Add the sleep deprivation of caring for an infant, and it’s easy to see why some women feel overwhelmed and slip into the baby blues. One of yoga’s benefits is a sense of control that helps you stay calm. And when you’re calm and feel centered, your baby will probably feel calm too.

Be Gentle with Yourself

Losing your baby weight is serious business. Too many women gain “just a few pounds” with every baby. They’re happy and busy just being mothers. Sadly, they may find themselves facing obesity and  health problems in later life, when it is even harder to lose weight.

To prevent these health issues in later life, your healthcare provider can help you be realistic, persistent, and patient in working toward a healthy weight. And here is another place that yoga can help. Because yoga teaches a firm but gentle discipline of body, mind, and emotion, it can help you maintain the persistence to meet your weight-loss goals.
