The Storyteller’s Version: How I Became the Right Writer for You

If you’ve searched for a SaaS writer to help you, you know it’s not easy to find the “right” writer – someone who understands both your offerings and your buyers. These insights come quickly to me, thanks to how I was raised, my training, and my professional experience.

Encouraged to Be Curious About How Things Work

Every table bore a pile of books and magazines.

Every table bore a pile of books and magazines.

I grew up in a big, rambling house in a small Indiana town, surrounded by a family that lived to understand how things work.

Almost daily, it seemed, there were long, sometimes heated “discussions” about how things worked, how they should work, and how they would work even better if any of them had been on the design team. Every table was piled high with magazines like Popular Science and Modern Photography.

I thought it was normal to be curious about how things work. And I’m still curious today.

Trained as a Journalist

My curiosity led me into the world of journalism, where I gained experience as an investigative reporter, a feature writer, and a managing editor. I learned how to interview experts and use stories to explain big issues.

Hired to Create the Textbook Equivalent of Psychology Today

My unofficial goal was to sell psychology as a potential career.

My unofficial goal: Sell psychology as a career.

My journalism training opened a big door at a major publisher of college textbooks.

My managers wanted a journalist to help them create the textbook equivalent of Psychology Today. My official assignment was to bring a journalistic flair to every page and image. My unofficial goal was to sell psychology as a potential career. By working with psychological ideas, I developed more empathy for the students and faculty who would be using my texts.

Next, I helped to create another groundbreaking text – the publisher’s first entry into the competitive market of information systems.

Joined the World of Software Publishing and E-Commerce

I have worked on B2C and B2B eCommerce sites.

From there, it was an easy move to a software publisher. As managing editor, I managed the staff, schedule, and budget needed to maintain 11,000 pages of content about tourist attractions.

In addition, I created the proposal for the company’s first e-commerce site and developed the requirements for integrating the CD-ROM software with an online reservation system.

As a technical writer, I won awards and judged professional competitions. As a business analyst, I was in demand for writing clear requirements.

Leaped into IT Consulting

I can speak IT or B2B, depending on a client's needs.

I can speak both IT and B2B.

From there, I became an IT consultant, providing technical writing, training, and business analysis services. My clients ranged from startups to Fortune 500 companies. Through my work as an IT consultant, I gained practical hands-on experience in dozens of industries and specialties that depend on technology.

In most of my assignments, I either worked for a Marketing department or worked closely with senior marketing managers.

Along the way, I was tapped to write training, web pages, brochures, demo scripts, audio scripts, and other marketing materials.

Through these experiences, I began to see the strategic value of the materials I worked on.

Trained as a Professional Copywriter and Digital Marketer

I find marketing fascinating and the world of copywriting and digital marketing even more fascinating. I respect these fields and have made an effort to learn and keep up with current practices. You can see some of my certifications at the bottom of the page.
